About this course

Content

The course provides insight into both the physics and modeling methods used in integrated analysis of offshore wind turbines: aerodynamic loads (by BEM theory), hydrodynamic loads, control engineering for wind turbines, and solution of the dynamic equilibrium equation. It will be shown how a wind turbine is designed and dimensioned using simulation tools, and a number of technological solutions will be presented.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course...

Knowledge:

The candidate should have knowledge of

  • spectral models of turbulent wind and irregular waves
  • aerodynamic calculations and models used in wind turbine development and load analysis;
  • Control system and how a wind turbine is regulated
  • wave loads on bottom-fixed and moving structures
  • Geotechnical challenges
  • dynamics of simple systems
  • Estimation of fatigue and lifespan
  • Dimensioning of fixed and moving wind turbines using load simulations
  • Relevant regulations
  • Marine operations and installation of wind turbines
  • Wake models
  • Modelling and analysis of drivetrains
  • Alternative and innovative concepts

Skills:

The candidate

  • can calculate the theoretical effect of offshore wind turbines
  • can perform simple load simulations in simulation tools and interpret the results
  • can evaluate new wind turbine concepts with regard to performance, safety and cost

General competence:

The candidate

  • has a general knowledge of existing technological solutions in the offshore wind energy industry
  • has a broad overview of factors that affect the performance and safety of a wind turbine
  • understand relevant uncertainties

Teaching methods

A physical gathering lasting two days in Trondheim as well as digital lectures that present theory and give examples of dynamic analysis and the design process. Calculation tasks with solution proposals that also contain elements of programming.

This is a continuing education course, and is not available for ordinary students.
