Anaesthetic Nursing 1

This course has a special focus on developing the students clinical competence to give advanced nursing to those with different illnesses and conditions. Observations and clinical evaluations of the critically ill will be important. Participation, ethical and legal challenges and cooperation between the patient and their supporters will also be a central theme. Critical illness will be understood in a life phase and multicultural perspective.

Topic 1: Nursing the critically ill at different phases.
-Surgical conditions
-Mulitrauma

Medical conditions such as:
-Cardiovascular disease
-Lung conditions
-Diabetes and other conditions in the endocrine system
-Kidney and urinary tract conditions
-Stomach and intestinal conditions
-Blood conditions-Geriatric conditions

Neurological conditions
Chronic pain disorders
Brain disorders (medical and caused by trauma)
Cancer
Serious chronic conditions with acute complications / multisystem conditions
Psychiatric illness
Palliative care

Topic 2: Critical illness in a life phase- and multicultural perspective.
-Children
-Adults
-Senior citizens

Topic 3: Pedagogical and legal perspectives of critical illness.
-Participation during critical illness
-Critical illness in a multicultural perspective
-Communication with people in times of grief and crisis
-Mastery of critical illness
-Patient and supporter experiences

-has advanced knowledge of nursing the critically ill

-has knowledge about relevant ethical theories for working with critically ill
-has knowledge about the critically ill, their family and supporters, and the health care professionals experiences of critical illness

Pedagogiske metoder:

Both classroom and simulation environments will be used to develop clinical competence of patient situations. Developing the competence to work with critically ill demands advanced knowledge from many disciplines, as well as the ability to integrate different knowledge forms in complex situations. Weight will be given to students abilities to observe, describe and evaluate the critically ill in a systematic and precise manner.The students will have an active and participatory role in the learning process. Work forms that stimulate development, independence and the ability to work in teams will be used.

Obligatoriske arbeidskrav:
Each student must write an assignment of about 3000 words, where a patients history of treatment will be adressed and evaluated. The assignment must be approved in advance of the ordinary exam.
