About this course

Content

  • Error theory and error propagation
  • Weights of observations
  • Least squares method; mathematical fundaments
  • Adjustment calculation using least squares method
  • Developing observation equations (from leveling, angle- and distance observations)
  • Adjustment of level nets (matlab/python)
  • Adjustment of resection (free stationing) (matlab/python)
  • Adjustment of networks (off the shelf software)
  • Blunder detection, goodness of fit test, internal reliability, external reliability and the related Norwegian standards
  • Network analyses (off the shelf software)
  • Coordinate transformations (matlab/python)

Learning outcomes

After completing the subject, the students will earn the following knowledge:

  • A good understanding of the principles of Least Squares based adjustment calculations and analyses of surveying data coming from different observations methods (leveling, total stations, GNSS).
  • Digitalization of adjustment calculation workflows: knowledge on using the most popular surveying software packages for solving real world tasks on the field of adjustment, and knowledge on performing analyses of data from leveling, total station, and GNSS based observations.
  • Being able to interpret the relevant professional standards and prepare documentation based on those.

General competencies:

Students will be able to independently design, measure and post-process a control point network meeting quality criteria determined by the relevant professional standards.

Teaching methods

  • Lectures
  • Project work
  • Supervision
  • The course has compulsory work requirements that must be completed at the campus of NTNU in Gjøvik. The schedule for this will be handed out at the start of the semester.

The course can be given as a guided self-study if less than 6 students are registered.
