About this course

Content

The course will give an introduction to the concept of geometallurgy and its application. The course will be divided into sections, where ore geology, process mineralogy and mineral processing are important topics. The idea of geometallurgy is to link the ore / mineral properties with processing performance and product quality and to implement this in the production planning through the use of geostatistics and block modelling. The choice of sampling and testing methods for geometallurgical testing will be emphasized together with an introduction to geometallurgical programmes and choice of procedures. In this course we will also relate the application of geometallurgy to the production of industrial minerals.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The student will achieve knowledge about theory and application of geometallurgy as well as knowledge about the most important fields related to geometallurgy. The student will have knowlegde about relevant digital learning platforms (as Edumine), and there may be some exercises in use of software tools.

Skills: The student will after fulfilling the course be able to apply geometallurgical principles in order to plan, communicate and implement a geometallurgical program.

General competence: After fulfilling this course the student will have a general competence in relevant geometallurgical terminology and have a good overview of the mining value chain from deposit to product.

Teaching methods

The course is taught through a series of lectures, compulsory theoretical and practical exercises as well as demonstrations. Possibility for excursions during weekends. If the number of registered students are 3 or less, the course may be offered as a self study based on the same course material. A mandatory one day excursion will be arranged during the semester. The course is evaluated by a reference group.
