Physical Sedimentology

The course aims to provide an understanding of the physical processes involved in sedimentary systems in order to improve the understanding of the formation of sedimentary structures and larger-scale sedimentary deposits.

Knowledge: The course participant will obtain knowledge of: fluid mechanics of sediment transport, sedimentary rheology, settling and erosion of cohesive and non-cohesive sediments, mathematical modelling in sedimentology.

Skills: The student will be able to apply fluid mechanical and physical knowledge to interpretation of sedimentary deposits.

Tutorial meetings and compulsory practicals. Compulsory field work may be scheduled for a weekend.
