Geographical Information Systems II

The course pursues the master subject Geog3510. Course participants that do not have this basis should also follow the lectures, read the compulsory readings and do the Geog3510 exercises to be familiar with GIS software package (ArcGIS). The content of the course will be adapted to the candidates’ specific needs for what she or he needs to know in order to apply GIS sucsessfully in her or his research project. For example, the course content could be particular GIS operations for data capture or analysis, or general GIS operations applied to a particular theme (such as armed conflicts, social vulnerability assessments). Suggestions for required course readings from the candidate and supervisor(s) are welcome. The candidate must write a paper and it is optional whether the language is Norwegian or English.

The course aims to provide the course participants an advanced level of knowledge on the application of geographical information systems (GIS) for their personal research area. This may include (but is not restricted to) the use of GIS in the study of armed conflict or assessments of vulnerability due to climate induced natural disasters.
