Philosophy of Geography, Theories and Concepts

The course gives a general overview of the development of geography as a dicipline from the 1950s until today where emphasis is placed on the ideas, traditions and philosophies which have been the most influential throughout this period. The majority of the lectures revolve around current key concepts, debates and philosophical perspectives.

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

• has advanced knowledge about present debates, concepts and philosophical perspectives in geography.

Skills:

• is able to identify, analyze and write about key mechanisms underlying conceptual and philosophical developments in the discipline.

General competence:

• has experience with academic analysis, enabling them to apply key geographical theories and concepts to various themes and case studies.

Up to 20 hours lectures and seminars.

Teaching is based on lectures included discussions and activities.
