Qualitative Methods

The course discusses the nature of qualitative methodology, different approaches to qualitative research and the phases in a research process. Methods like different forms of interviews, observation, and document studies will be presented. The course presents and discusses core concepts like positionality, reflexivity, ethics, and quality in research.

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

• has obtained an advanced understanding of methodological principles, core concepts and techniques in qualitative Research.

Skills:

• is able to discuss, apply and assess qualitative methods in relation to a chosen research design.

General competency:

• is able to write an independent assignment focusing on research design or specific aspects of qualitative research.

Up to 14 hours lectures and individual compulsory assignment. The compulsory assigment is to write a methods paper.

Students who are admitted to a international programme of study are required to answer compulsory activities and examinations in English. Students admitted to a Norwegian programme of study can answer in Norwegian, English or a Scandinavian language.
