People and Place 2

The lectures and field course introduce the students to urban development and growth through time, and central topics in urban geography such as urbanisation and the role of cities in a globalised world, urban-suburban relationships, economic developments, urban identities and images, immigration, social space and segregation, and sustainable urban development, urban planning and governance. The course relates to a Norwegian context, and the lectures and field course discusses examples from Trondheim. The course emphasizes relationships between the individual, urban communities and wider society, by discussing the intersections between local, national and global processes. Group assignments are included as part of the field course. The group assignment needs to be approved before the written examination can be taken.

Knowledge: Has basic knowledge of central themes within urban geography, and an understanding of the relationships between individual, urban communities and wider society, and the interplay between global, national and local prosesses. Skills: Is able to reflect on urban development and change, including reasons and the conflicting interests of urban development and change. General competence: Is able to collaborate on a group-based assignment. Have basic skills in writing a short academic text.
