People and Place 1

An introduction to central topics, concepts and approaches from sub-disciplines within Geography is provided through lectures and fieldwork. The course covers both global and local perspectives and processes as well as their interrelationship. Emphasis is placed on the connection between the individual and community. Several Norwegian cases are addressed, mainly representing a rural context.
Historical development of the country, current problems and spatial conflicts, landscape characteristics, population and settlement, economic life, as well as place identity/regional identity are studied. Part of the teaching is based on examples from a region in Trøndelag.
Group assignments are included as part of the fieldwork. Each group prepares a fieldwork report, which must be approved before the written examination can be taken.

Knowledge: Be familiar with basic topics, concepts and approaches of the sub-disciplines within geography. Have general knowledge of the interrelationship between global and local processes, as well as more specific knowledge of the development in rural areas in Norway. Have special insight into a concrete region in Trøndelag
Skills: Be able to reflect on how places and regions are formed and how they change.
General competence: Be able to co-operate in a group-based assignment. Have basic knowledge concerning how to write a short academic text.

20 hours lectures and 3 days fieldtrip outside Trondheim.
