About this course
Content
Students will work with specific problems related to crustal magnetism, including theoretical aspects of rock and mineral magnetism, crystal chemistry, paleomagnetism and advanced interpretation of potential field anomalies. Specific project work will include field, laboratory and interpretation work: VSM, AMS, AF demag, Forc and Preisach measurements, use of advanced software for modelling and interpretation. Current and classic journal articles will be discussed and presented by students in class.
Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE: Students will be able to apply methods of interpretation of potential field anomalies on all scales from satellite to micron.
SKILLS: Basic theoretical rock and mineral physics of the oxides and how to apply these concepts to state of the art modelling and interpretation of potential field data.
GENERAL COMPETENCE: Laboratory projects will aim at coupling rock magnetism to the finer scale mineral magnetism.
Teaching methods
The course is given if 3 or more students attend. Lectures, seminars, field- and laboratory work including methods used in rock and paleomagnetism, and exploration. Project reports and presentation of projects must be successfully approved prior to oral exam. In addition, students will lead discussions on current scientific articles.
