About this course

Content

I. Optical radiation with UV:
Emission and absorption of light, excited states, photo reactions, effects on cells and organisms, action spectra, DNA damage, reparation, photo reactions of drugs, photodynamic therapy (PDT), light and vision, photometry and radiometry, laser radiation, UV dosage, ozone, health and environmental effects. Photo biology: photo synthesis, light and the human clock, photo therapy etc.
II: Low-frequency electromagnetic fields: Fields from sources, near field, far field, field values at home and in the industry. Absorption and shielding, skin effect, measurement techniques for static and time-dependent fields. Epidemiology, dosage, exposure, allowed values. Biological mechanisms. Topics related to society: power lines, radio waves, cellular phones. Medical applications of electromagnetic fields.

Learning outcomes

The student is expected to obtain knowledge about the biological effects of non-ionizing radiation and electromagnetic fields.

Teaching methods

The course is given every 3 years, next time spring 2009.
Concentrated course. Lectures, demonstrations, laboratory and calculation exercises.
