About this course

Content

Normally given every other year, next time autumn 2026. The course is a continuation of FY3464 Quantum Field Theory I and TFY4210 Quantum theory of Solids. Renormalization and the renormalization group. Critical phenomena. Spontaneous symmetry breakdown. The Goldstone theorem. The Higgs mechanism. Effective field theories and applications.

Learning outcomes

The student is expected to obtain insight into the most important aspects of quantum field theories. In particular, students are expected to obtain knowledge about the renormalization group, critical phenomena, thermal field theory, symmetries and symmetry breaking, effective field theories and applications.

General competence: The candidate should be able to apply abstract mathematical models to concrete physical problems, get training in oral scientific presentations.

Teaching methods

Lectures and problem sessions or student seminars. When lectures and lecture material are in English, the exam may be given in English only.
