About this course
Content
The course gives a general introduction to the essential processes of life, based on principles from physics. Among others, these topics are covered: Transport processes, structure and function of proteins and DNA, membrane processes. A few biophysical measurement techniques will also be covered.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, and general competence: Knowledge: Descriptive knowledge about cells and cell organelles' fundamental properties and functions. Detailed knowledge about vital organic molecules and macromolecules, in particular proteins and DNA. Knowledge about how key concepts such as the law of mass action, osmosis, membrane potential, and material fluxes can be derived from thermodynamics. Diffusion, diffusion equations, as well as inter- and intramolecular interactions are discussed in detail. Skills: Perform analysis of and calculations on biological problems, e.g., analysis of enzyme reactions and numerical modeling of biological systems. General competence: Increased understanding of interdisciplinarity.
Teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory exercises, calculation exercises. Extensive use of spreadsheets. The re-sit examination (in August) may be changed from written to oral.
