Master's Thesis in Film and Video Production

This course contains the practical and theoretical part of working with the master thesis.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, students

• are familiar with the challenges connected to developing, planning and completing large-scale media productions
• know how to set film theoretical concepts into play in the context of production
• have deep knowledge within a specific field of film studies

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, students have the ability to

• decide upon, formulate, develop and complete a film scholarly work, as well as a large-scale media production
• work independently with the production of academic text as well as with film production
• perform one of the roles of the master film production
• choose, apply and reflect upon relevant theoretical and practical perspectives and methodologies
• reflect upon, discuss and adjust decisions taken in both the theoretical and practical project.
• reflect upon and adjust the project according to relevant research ethics
• mediate the results according to academic standards
• review relevant production and research ethical problems

Individual supervision on the written thesis, including individual- and collective tutoring seminars on production work. As supplement to supervision given by an assigned supervisor, a supervision seminar is offered every term to all master students across levels. During the seminar the students will give and receive feedback on their own and fellow student's texts. The seminar is offered in connection to, or in addition to, other Masters' level courses.

Compulsory assignments:

• Project description for the written part of the thesis developed during first or second semester, and presented both in oral and written form during a supervision seminar.
• Presentation of a thesis chapter during the third or fourth semester, and give feedback on fellow students chapters.

The volume of the thesis is of about 16 000 - 24 000 words. The number of words does not include front page, preface, table of content, literature and attachments. The word numbers must be added to the thesis, and the student is responsible for its accuracy. All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 - 1 page. The abstract should be written in Norwegian and preferably also in English. Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard.
