Documentary film production

FVP2001 is a practical supplementary course that focuses on documentary film production and related genres.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the student has knowledge about:

• genre specific audio-visual forms of expression, including insight into the distinctive communicative character, of the documentary film genre
• workflow and the technical process from idea to finished audio-visual expression in documentary film production
• different crew functions and production processes applied in the making of audio-visual documentary productions
• editorial decisions, issues and ethics associated with interacting with other people during documentary film making work

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the student knows how to:

• develop and produce a documentary film production
• communicate documentary topics efficiently through the creative use of direction, cinematography, lighting, editing and sound design
• budget and plan audiovisual documentary film productions
• practice the ethical treatment of persons; to identify and be mindful of the experiences, feelings and thoughts of others before, during and after the making of documentary films

Lectures, seminars, group sessions and exercises are given during the course.

Course requirements: Compulsory production work. The number of production works that must be submitted will be specified by the course supervisor at the start of the course.

To be able to be assigned a final grade for the course, the student must have attended 80% of the course. The requirement of 80% attendance and active participation is absolute. The legitimate absence of 20% covers absence due to illness or other causes. Absence exceeding the 20% limit is not accepted, even if it's caused by circumstances the student is not responsible for. In special cases, like serious or long-term illness, the student can be given individual education by application to the department.

It is the student's responsibility to keep updated on messages from the department or the teacher on Canvas. The course language is Norwegian.
