Inter- and Cross-cultural Communication

This course is especially designed for students who wish to enhance their language and communication skills for professional communication in intercultural contexts. It will engage with professional areas such as media, business, education, interpreting, translation, publishing, tourism, and public administration. The course is of special interest to students who would like to proceed to a career in an international organization or company, where intercultural competence is required.

The course is aimed at combining knowledge-based and skill-oriented training to develop intercultural competence and to enhance international employability.

Knowledge
The candidate:
• Has an understanding of the principles and practice of cultural translation with reference to English, Norwegian and French (or the selected language orientation).
• Has an understanding of the foundational principles of intercultural and cross-cultural communication theories.
• Has an understanding of the key-elements required for the development of intercultural competence within professional life.

Skills
The candidate:
• Can analyze case studies relating to intercultural communication challenges from a variety of theoretical approaches.
• Can undertake an oral presentation relating to a relevant case study.
• Can actively participate in a group project related to intercultural and/or cross-cultural communication.

Lectures, seminars, discussions, student presentations, and group projects. It's learning. The course will be delivered in English, but will have two primary language-orientations: English and French. The oral presentation and the home exam will be undertaken in the language orientation selected.

Compulsory assignments: Oral presentation.

Assessment: Home exam (5-6 pages) undertaken in the language orientation selected by students admitted to a master's degree in French or another language orientation. Students admitted to other programs write the exam in English.
