The History of Film

FILM1013 is a course devoted to the roughly one-hundred-year-long history of film.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have knowledge about:
- film history from the earliest experiments with moving pictures to current-day digital film technology
- the development of dominating and alternative narrative forms throughout film history
- the history of film in regards to production, distribution and screening of films, both domestically and internationally
- key artistic and industrial developments throughout film history
- basic perceptions of the historiography of film, in terms of interpretations and written sources

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will know how to:
- distinguish between- and identify films from different epochs and style periods and place them in the right order both chronologically and style wise.
- give account for the main lines in the film media technological, industrial, social, political and cultural development and meaning throughout film history
- discuss basic problems of film history

Lectures, film screenings, tutorials.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments and to stay updated on any information provided by the department or course director via Blackboard.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.
