Bachelor's thesis

The course is intended as a final course in the bachelor program. In consultation with the course lecturer/supervisor, the student chooses the topic and problem for discussion in the bachelor thesis. The problem can be theoretical or practical. Individual supervision is a central part of the course.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:

• overview and knowledge of a philosophical/ethical topic
• understanding of how perspectives, positions, and arguments on this topic can be linked to and illuminate a chosen problem for discussion
• an overview of the philosophical/ethical background for the problem, and the philosophical contexts in which the problem lies

Skills:

• formulate an issue and find relevant literature
• discuss the chosen problem in an independent way, based on academic literature, and possibly other sources
• ability to improve text/thesis based on feedback and supervision
• present and defend the bachelor thesis

The student’s own work on the topic, under supervision, is central. Students who have chosen a topic or issue that is related to the topic of another philosophy/ethics course that is taught in the same semester, are encouraged to follow this course. There is also a seminar (or meetings) specifically for students who write their bachelor’s thesis (which deals with academic writing and student presentations).

The obligatory activity can only be approved the semester the course is taught, but is valid for this and the subsequent semester.
