Children and Youth: Public Health 1

This topic gives a thorough introduction about the children and youth population, children’s rights, and different ways to organize welfare both nationally and globally. Theoretical perspectives from both developmental psychology and constructionist sociology are introduced. Special attention will be given to the actual dominating welfare challenges children and youth are facing, and the relevance of multidisciplinary and multi-field-based collaboration needed to handle these challenges. Vulnerable groups of children, which on permanent of temporal basis receive health- and welfare services in their everyday life (to expl. disabled children, children with minority background, injured children, and children as relatives /surviving relatives) get special attention. The student will be trained in identifying and discussing public health services pro, as well as pro and cons in their attempt to create good welfare for children and youth.

Knowledge:
• The student has thorough knowledge about the Norwegian child- and youth population
• The student has knowledge about a variety of theoretical perspectives on children and childhood
• The student has thorough knowledge about different welfare- models, public- and voluntary-sectors relevant for children, youth and their families
• The student has thorough knowledge about the welfare challenges children and youth face nationally and globally
• The student has thorough knowledge about children’s rights according to health-, educational- and welfare issues

General:
The student is able to identify the connections and correlations between structural and individual level when identifying children and youth’s health and welfare-problems and resources

Lectures, group work and seminars. The course will be held in Trondheim.
