Strategies of Listening as a Tool in Musicology and Music Technology

The course embraces basic listening principles in musicology and music technology, and thus establishes a common platform for students who wish to study music technology and musicology from different backgrounds and experience.

Knowledge:

The candidate
- knows basic strategies of listening connected to music technology and musicology
- has basic knowledge of methods of listening in different genres
- has basic knowledge of auditory perception
- is familiar with basic acoustics
- is familiar with sound production in various genres
- from musicology has basic knowledge of popular music
- from musicology has basic knowledge of different types of vocal/instrumental improvisation
- from music technology has basic knowledge of performance oriented use of music technology

Skills:

The candidate
- can with the use of methods of listening analyse and discuss different music recordings and soundscapes
- can use simple music software to make recordings and process them to various sound sequences / compositions
- can identify how music technology and production strategies are used in a music production
- can formulate his/her knowledge i written and oral form

Lectures: 2 hours per week for 12 weeks. Exercises.

Seminars for the musicology students: 1 hour aural training and 1 hour improvisation per week.

Seminars for the music technology students: Exercises in practical, performance oriented use of music technology, a total of 24 hours.
