Text and Argumentation

The course is partly theoretical and partly practical. An introduction is given to basic argumentation theory, focusing on different argument structures and assessment of the peculiarities and strengths of different kinds of argument, plus common errors in reasoning. The relationship between language and meaning is discussed and exemplified through issues such as definition and interpretation of sentences. The course also provides a brief introduction to rhetorical concepts and genre analysis, and how to evaluate information and sources in a critical manner. The practical side of the course consists partly in the application of the theory to academic texts, and partly in students' own work with analysis of texts and production of own work.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:
- Students will have received an introduction to academic culture’s mode of thinking and writing, and received training in how to read, understand and critically evaluate academic texts, and to assess sources critically.
- Students will have become aware of some important theoretical tools for use later in their academic studies and professional life, primarily related to arguments, evidence and factual presentation.

Skills:
- The course will have put the students in a position to understand how an academic text is built up, identify the text's central problem or theme, analyze key arguments in the text and to take a critical attitude to the text.

Instruction consists of lectures and seminars. Guide to take-home exam will be given on group sessions. Two approved submissions are required to take the exam. The written assignments are only given in the semester when the subject is taught, but these are valid for this and the subsequent semester.
