Music and Mathematics - With Pythagoras into the Foundations of Sound

The course presents basic principles in structuring music (melodious, harmonic and rhythmic), an elementary introduction to mathematics and physics with respect to the sources of musical sound (instruments) and music application, and a demonstration of how music, mathematics, physics and sound experience all converge in the subject Music Technology. This ex.fac-subject thus establishes a common platform for students eager to study music technology based on a variety of experience and background.

According to Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans, music, mathematics, physics and philosophy were closely integrated parts of the cosmos, arranged by numbers. "Everything is numbers", Pythagoras reputedly said, and he viewed music as pure mathematics. This ex.fac. course aims at providing an introduction to the (expanded) significance Pythagoras has today.
