EU expansions

The course provides, on the basis of new theory and a comparative approach, a general introduction to EUs expansions. It however devotes most attention to the eastward expansions in 2004 and 2007. The eastward expansions are compared with the southward expansions in the 1980s and the northern expansion in 1994. The course elaborates on the EUs own conditions for accepting new members, why European non-member countries wanted EU membership, how they became members, and the national consequences of membership. The course concludes by assessing the possibility of Turkish membership in the EU.

Insights about the tensions between deepening and widening of the EU as well as conceptual tools to analyse these tensions. The course provides a theoretically informed contemporary perspective on the basic conditions and problems related to the EUs expansions.
