European Organizations

The course presents European organizations that are external to the EU, such as the Council of Europe, NATO, the WEU, the Nordic Council, OSCE, EFTA/EEA. The different agreements of co-operation are analysed in light of the tension between different national interests, regional interests and the greater goal of integration expressed in the EU. Norway’s placement and interests in this situation are also discussed.

The course should provide an understanding of the complexity involved in the overlap of international political organizations in Europe, and their relevance for Norway, the EU and the European integration process in general.
