Norway in Europe

Why is Norway not a member of the EU? To what extent does Norway still participate in EU cooperation and how does this participation work? Drawing on a variety of theoretical perspectives, this course provides a thorough introduction to Norway's relationship with European integration after the Second World War and up to the present day, with particular emphasis on the EEA Agreement. During the course, we also review Norway's cooperation with the EU in areas such as climate policy, energy policy, defense and security policy, justice and domestic policy, and agricultural and fisheries policy. We map how Norwegian actors operate in Brussels, and we examine the debate about the EU in Norway.

Successful candidates are expected to have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

Students have

• knowledge of Norway's relationship with European integration as it has developed from the end of the Second World War to the present day
• insight into relevant theoretical perspectives and how they can contribute to explaining Norwegian European policy
• insight into key concepts for the analysis of Norway's relationship with European integration, such as supranationality, intergovernmentalism, adaptation and differentiated integration.

Skills

Students are able to

• identify and analytically discuss key junctures and developments in Norwegian European policy
• apply key concepts in the field in relation to discussions of contemporary historical issues
• communicate knowledge orally and in writing, using the appropriate terminology
