About this course

Content

The aim of the course is to give the student an advanced knowledge of construction principle applied on modern constructions such as permanent magnet machines. The course emphasizes on constructions characterizing parameters. A study of construction examples will be undertaken. In this study several deep going sub topics to provide a good overall solution is discussed. Entries for the sub topics in the course are: - General limiting factors and scaling rules - Calculation of losses - Cooling - Winding layout - Magnetic core material - Permanent magnet material - Optimization - Cost modelling

Learning outcomes

Knowledge After completing the course, the student shall be in the research front of this technology area. A deep understanding of the application of permanent magnet materials in traditional and new electrical machine designs is expected, as well as knowledge about the most modern winding design solutions. Skills: After completing the course, the student shall be able to design and construct permanent magnet machines. The knowledge is on the current research level.

Teaching methods

The teaching is based on a colloqium approach, where each topic is briefly presented before a more detailed discussion takes place. All participants must prepare before each colloqium. The course is given when needed.
