About this course
Content
The course is an in depth study of selected topics about power transformers. In more detail, the content of the course is: - Basic transformer theory. Equivalent circuit. Dimensional analysis. - Transformer construction and fabrication. This includes transformer core and windings. Use and design of different type of cores and windings. - Materials - use and properties(core, insluation, cooling, supporting parts). Historical development. - Reactances, forces - Surge phenomena (short circuit, impulse voltages, inrush phenomena) - Cooling - thermal analysis - Testing - Operation
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: After completing the course, the student shall: - understand transformer design. - understand principles for operation of transformers. - be able to develop futher tailor made transformer models of e.g. core losses. - have knowledge about materials used in core, windings, insulation and cooling. - understand principles for transformer testing. - understand the relationship between requirements and design implementation. - understand factors driving modern day development and optimization, based on knowledge about the historical development. Skills: After completing the course, the student shall be able to: - develop tools for design calculation and parameter calculation for transformers. - develop tailored models for analysis of surge phenomena. - specify, test and operate power transformers.
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on a colloquium approach, where each topic is briefly presented before a more detailed discussion takes place. All participants must prepare before the weekly colloquium. The course will be given in English if necessary. The course is given every second year.
