About this course

Content

The course presents methods for accurate modeling and calculation of transients in electrical power systems. Main content: - Summary of types of transients. - Modelling of components with focus on overhead lines, cables and transformers, but also machines and circuit breakers are covered. - Analysis of travelling wave problems. Formulation and solutions in time and frequency domain when losses and distortion is taken into account. Fourier transforms, modal analysis, and vector fitting. - Description and analysis of ferro-resonance and inrush currents in transformers.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: After completing the course, the student shall: - understand the principles for accurate modeling and calculation of overvoltages in power systems - understand the feasibility of models for various phenomena - have achieved a detailed understanding in methods for advanced modeling of transmission lines, cables and transformers valid under stationary and transient conditions.

Skills: After completing the course, the student shall be able to: - carry out transient calculations in EMTP programs - evaluate the validity of models for various transient phenomena

Teaching methods

Colloquiums and lectures. Calculation and computer excercises, MatLab, Maple, EMTP. Laboratory exercises. The course is given every second year.
