About this course

Content

The main content is basic aspects of detailed mechanistic modelling of multiphase flows for typical examples of such flows in technological context. Particular topics include: Conservation laws and interface conditions, averaging theorems, local and global forms, dispersed flow and turbulence, hydrodynamic interaction between phases, distributed effects in two-and three dimensions, waves and instabilities on interfaces, driftflux and two-fluid models, dynamic multiphase transport.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
Basic background of multiphase models for stratified, dispersed, and granular flow phenomena, mostly in technological context, both in 1-D and multidimensional settings. Limitations and range of validity of classical models, and current computational techniques for systems including turbulence models and interaction forces with bubbles, droplets, and particles.
Skills:
Candidates are able to work with state of the art multiphase models, and with related numerical simulations, in a wide variety of problems from mechanical, metallurgical, chemical - and petroleum engineering.
General competence:
Understanding the basic mechanistic - and thermodynamic concepts behind typical multiphase models, and ability to apply this - along with current computational tools - to further research and development in science and technology.

Teaching methods

Lectures and written voluntary exercises. The course is being taught only if 3 or more students are enrolled. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
