About this course

Content

The following topics are covered:-Condensation: Fundamental heat and mass transfer. Condensation of single component vapors and vapor mixtures. Fluid flow, pressure drop and heat transfer in condensers. Design of condensers.-Boiling/evaporation: Fundamental heat transfer theory. Critical heat flux. Boiling of mixtures. Pressure drop and heat transfer in process equipent, including steam generators. Self-circulation and forced-circulation systems. Design of process equipment.// The course will normally not be offered if there are less than 5 candidates.

Learning outcomes

-Knowledge: •Vapor/liquid two-phase flows: Different flow regimes occurring in pipe flows, calculation of characteristic quantities such as void, slip velocity and pressured drop in two-phase flows. • Heat transfer by condensation: Gravity assisted and convection controlled flows. Heat transfer in laminar and turbulent conditions. Annular flows. Heat and mass transfer in condensation of mixtures. • Heat transfer in boiling: Pool boiling and convective boiling. Criteria for bubble nucleation and bubble growth in boundary layers. Boiling of mixtures. –The course gives the student insight about: • Heat transfer and pressure drop in two-phase flows. • Mass transfer in boiling and condensation of mixtures. • Practical methods for treatment of heat transfer and pressure drop in boiling and condensation. -Skills: The course enables the student to: •Analyze and calculate pressured drop in two-phase in-tube flows for practical situations. •Analyze and calculate heat transfer in condensation and boiling of single- and multicomponent fluids i heat transfer equipment. -General competence: The course gives the student: •Advanced knowledge concerned with two-phase flow, heat transfer and pressure drop in boiling and condensing flows in heat transfer equipment.
