About this course

Content

The course is taught every 2nd year, next time fall 2027. Energy, exergy, irreversibility. Exergy transfer and exergy loss in thermal and chemical processes, e.g. power processes, combustion, boiling, cooling proscesses, mixing and separation. Exergy balance for system and subsystems. Optimization of energy processes. Exergy and irreversibility of flowing media, flow fields, turbulence.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The student gets insight into -Energy, exergy, irreversibility. -Exergy analysis as method and tool. Skills: The student should be able to -calculate the exergy of energy and material flows. -put up exergy balances for thermodynamic systems, including new/unknown systems. -use exergy analysis to map exergy transfer and exergy losses in thermal and chemical processes, e.g. power production, combustion, chemical production, boiling, cooling processes, mixing and separation. General competence: The student should have an understanding for - how the 1st and 2nd law of thermodynamics direct physical processes. -optimization of energy processes.

Teaching methods

Guided self study/colloquia. Exersises. Project work. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
