About this course

Content

  • Electrochemistry and chemistry for batteries
  • Battery chemistry
  • Cell designs
  • Engineering and dimensioning analysis

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

  • Designs of secondary lithium ion batteries - LIB
  • Electrochemistry of electrochemical cells and batteries in particular.
  • Energy calculations of LIB
  • Principles of most common chemistries in anodes and cathodes
  • Electrolyte compositions of LIB
  • Battery chemistry
  • Basic LIB cell designs
  • Engineering and dimensioning analysis
  • LIB terminology

Skills:

  • Calculate energies and efficiencies of common LIBs
  • Differentiate between different energy losses in LIB and their contribution to energy efficiency in in LIBs
  • Understand how cell design can be changed to design cells for power or energy applications

Competence:

  • The candidates can distinguish between different cell LIB chemsitries and their use in different applications and markets.
  • The candidate can estimate energy usage in different LIBs and set up simple models for operation at different C-rates and separate different heat sources and contributions to loss in energy efficiency.
