Literature and Culture in the Classroom

This is a didactically oriented course in which the following topics are addressed: reading, ways of reading, young adult fiction, literary materials as starting points for reflection on topics within civilization and culture, adapted teaching, and assessment.

Knowledge

The student has

• knowledge of a variety of relevant English-speaking literature in relevant genres
• knowledge of didactical justifications of using literature within the subject of English

Skills

The student can

• plan and conduct varied teaching in English, using English literature
• use and apply his or her knowledge of literature as a tool for teaching, and in relation to culturally oriented topics
• contribute to strengthening of pupils' overall language proficiency in English
• express oneself in a suitable manner in English with an awareness of purpose, context, and situation

General competence

The student has

• insight into how to develop his or her own language proficiency through reading

The course is offered online with a duration of approximately 11 weeks, and consists of lectures, each within a given topic. The respective topics will be treated through a lecture, relevant readings, and exercises. Students will maintain contact the teacher and peers through a forum and open course blog. Digital tools will be applied in regard to oral presentations and online meetings.

Compulsory activities

The course requires submission of 2-4 extensive obligatory assignments, which will vary in their purpose, form, and content. Smaller assignments such as blog entries and reading responses may also be given. All assignments are evaluated as approved/not approved and will not be part of the final assessment. However, all obligatory course work must be approved for the student to be eligible for the exam.
