Writing in the Classroom

This is a didactically oriented course in which the following topics are addressed: the development of writing competence within a range of genres, writing to learn, adapted teaching, and assessment.

Knowledge

The candidate has

• knowledge of writing, and the development of writing proficiency within the subject of English in today's schools
• knowledge of how to respond meaningfully and formatively in an academic setting

Skills

The student can

• engage with relevant sources and materials in his or her own writing
• express him or herself in English, both orally and in writing, suited to the context, purpose, and situation
• contribute to the development of pupils' overall proficiency in English

General competence

The student has

• insight into how to develop own language proficiency through writing

The course is offered online with a duration of approximately 11 weeks, and consists of lectures, each within a given topic. The respective topics will be treated through a written lecture, a short video introduction, relevant readings, and exercises. Students will maintain contact the teacher and peers through an online forum.

Compulsory work

The course requires the submission of 2-4 extensive obligatory assignments, which will vary in their purpose, form, and content. Smaller assignments such as blog entries and reading responses may also be included. All assignments are evaluated as approved/not approved and will not be part of the final assessment. However, all obligatory course work must be approved in order for the student to be eligible for the exam.
