Special Subject in English Language

Language of instruction is English.

The course explores a topic of central importance within the field of English linguistics/language studies (e.g. syntax, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies), or an interdisciplinary topic spanning more than one of those subfields. The course may build upon themes explored in lower-level courses.

A more detailed description of the academic content will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester. Students will write a term paper linked to the topic of the course.

Candidates who have passed this course

• have in-depth understanding of a topic of central importance in a subfield of English linguistics / language studies
• have critical insight into scientific approaches and methods relevant to the analysis of the subject material

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course

• are able to write substantial analytical and/or argumentative texts on the topic studied in academic English, making appropriate use of relevant theoretical notions and specialist scientific literature from the relevant discipline(s).

A combination of lectures, seminars, group activity, and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.

Compulsory assignments

• 1 written/oral assignment, equivalent to approx. 1000 words
• 1 outline of term paper with literature list approx. 1200 words

Approved obligatory assignments are only valid for the semester in which the approval is given. All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
