History and Politics

Language of instruction is English.

This course will explore a specific theme within the field of Anglophone political cultures in relation to a particular historical period. The course will give students in-depth knowledge of appropriate research methods for the study of history and culture, which they were introduced to at the 1000-level. Students will work with a range of sources and texts so that they can further develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The course provides the basis for further studies in history and culture at the 3000-level.

• have in-depth knowledge of the history and politics of one or more Anglophone societies
• have specific insights into critical perspectives on the particular theme of the course
• have a greater understanding of specialized texts and sources used in the study of history and culture

Candidates who have passed this course

• can debate political, social, and cultural issues from historical and contemporary perspectives
• can analyze and discuss a range of texts and sources both in the classroom and in different forms of academic writing
• can make effective use of scholarly practices such as close reading, source evaluation, and the dissemination of knowledge
• can produce independent pieces of work that closely follow the requirements of academic writing in relevant disciplines

General competence

Candidates who have passed this course

• have further developed their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills in history and culture
• can engage with different interpretations of specific historical and cultural developments in Anglophone societies
• are able to demonstrate a very good command of English

A combination of lectures, seminars, group activity, and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.

Compulsory assignments

1-3 written and/or oral assignments, equivalent to 2000-2500 words in total. Specific tasks will be defined at the start of the semester.

Approved obligatory assignment is only valid for the semester in which the approval is given.
