Literature: Drama and Poetry

Language of instruction is English.

This course is a genre-based introduction to poetry and drama in English. Presenting important English-language literary texts, the course explores a selection of poems and plays so as to illuminate the different forms and techniques found within these principal generic categories. The course also provides an introduction to specialist terminology used within literary criticism.

Candidates who have passed this course

• are familiar with a variety of significant English-language poems and plays
• have knowledge of different genres of English-language drama and poetry
• have insight into how genre conventions and expectations associated with drama and poetry convey meaning
• are familiar with and able to use the English-language terminology associated with drama and poetry
• may become familiar with basics of library research

Candidates who have passed this course

• are able to write a literary analysis in correct English
• are able to read dramatic and poetic texts in a critical and independent manner

General competence

Candidates who have passed this course

• have oral and written competence in English that expand beyond a literature classroom
• develop introductory cross-cultural literacy
• can engage in a critical reflection of diverse cultural works

A combination of lectures, seminars, group activity, and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.

Compulsory assignments

1-3 written and/or oral assignments, equivalent to 1000-1500 words in total. Specific tasks will be defined at the start of the semester. Students with the MLSPRÅK program may be assigned a separate obligatory assignment.

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
