Society, Politics, and Culture

Language of instruction is English.

This course will offer an introduction to the history, politics, and/or culture of one or more Anglophone societies during a specific historical period. The course will introduce students to appropriate research methods for the study of society, politics, and/or culture. The course will also provide students with an opportunity to work with a range of sources and texts so that they can start to develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The course provides the basis for further studies in history and/or culture in the English degree program.

• have broad knowledge of the history, politics and/or culture of one or more Anglophone societies
• have an overview of important debates about the specific themes that the course focuses on
• have an awareness of different texts and sources used in the study of society, politics and/or culture

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course

• can explain political, social, and/or cultural issues from historical and contemporary perspectives
• can analyze and discuss a range of texts and sources both in the classroom and in different forms of academic writing
• have explored important scholarly practices such as close reading, evaluating texts and sources, and the dissemination of knowledge
• can produce independent pieces of work that follow the requirements of academic writing in relevant disciplines

General competence

Candidates who have passed this course

• have started to develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills in history and/or culture
• can recognize different interpretations of broad historical and cultural developments in Anglophone societies
• are able to demonstrate a good command of English

A combination of lectures, seminars, group activity, and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.

Obligatory Assignment

1-3 written and/or oral assignments, equivalent to 1000-1500 words in total. Specific tasks will be defined at the start of the semester. Students with the MLSPRÅK program may be assigned a separate obligatory assignment.

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
