About this course

Content

Bioenergy:
Energy sustainability perspective
The use of bioenergy in the Nordic countries
Biological, technical and financial constraints
Combustion of biomass in different furnaces
Market knowledge about the end market (heat, electricity and fuel) for bioenergy
Hydro power:
Dam types, flood channels, hatches, valves, intake.
Turbine Types
River power stations, high or low pressure systems with dams
Watersheds, snow reservoirs, inflow forecasts
Environmental aspects of hydropower development - consequences and measures
Running the reservoir in relation to demand and inflow.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
The student should after completing the course have a basic knowledge of current biomass for energy purposes of agricultural and forest land, biofuels and refining processes.
Know how combustion of biomass takes place and can calculate the energy content of different biomasses based from wood.
Understand the technical components of a hydropower plant, both high pressure and low pressure systems, and know the different turbines, where they work. Know to which environmental impacts can be expected and possible measures that can be taken to reduce the environmental impact
The technical components of the waterway in a power plant.
Turbine types efficiencies.
Have basic knowledge of current biomass for energy purposes from forest areas.
Explain the main characteristics of improved plant biofuels and refining processes.
Combustion of biomass

Skills:
Students should be able to calculate potential energy and power in connection with the flow and fall height.
Students will learn to calculate the required furnace capacity at varying energy needs
General competence:
Students should be able to account for the environmental aspects of hydropower development, the use of bioenergy and the impacts and measures that can be done in such contexts.
