About this course

Content

The course consists of three parts that together give an overview of and introduction to high voltage technology. This is competence needed to operate and develop safe and reliable power systems for transport of electrical energy. The first part (Infrastructure) introduces high voltage infrastructure and the technologies and functions applied. This includes the design of the power system and justification of voltage levels and topologies, and the involved components with their functionality. Trends and developments are covered. The second part (Stresses) gives a short introduction to stresses, design and calculations. This includes different types of overvoltages (lightning, switching, temporary) and electrostatic fields. Methods and tools for calculations, simulations and measurements are introduced. The third part (Fault handling) addresses fault handling and condition assessment in high voltage systems. This includes fault over-current and distance protection, cable and overhead line fault location, and an introduction to condition monitoring of high voltage components. Digitalization tendencies in protection and condition monitoring is addressed.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

After completing the course, the candidate:

  • Understands the justification for selection and layout of power systems and voltage levels and has a clear overview of conventional high voltage installations and the components and functions involved.
  • Has a good understanding of the stresses that applies to high voltage components and fundamental solutions to limit the consequence of these.
  • Has an overview of methods for fault analysis and protection of high voltage installations and how this is developed and digitalized today.

Skills:

After completing the course, the candidate:

  • Can communicate the layout of high voltage installations based on observations and drawings.
  • Can make simple measurements and calculations of electric stresses and document this.
  • Can use computer programs for simple calculations of electrical fields and transients.
  • Can chose type of condition monitoring and protection measures.

General competence:

After completing the course, the candidate has obtained increased capabilities of:

  • Multi-disciplinary cooperation.
  • To communicate with precision to peers and non-specialists with technical reports and presentations.
  • To work in the laboratory in a safe and effective way.
  • Develop reports and protocols.
