Cultural Competence

The module seeks to increase awareness about the relationship between language competence and cultural understanding. It covers different perspectives on culture in language teaching with a special focus on the current emphasis on intercultural competence.

The student
- has a thorough understanding of the importance of culture in language learning, from a historical perspective to the current emphasis on intercultural competence
- has knowledge about how cultural awareness can contribute to increased cultural understanding and prevent stereotypical views on target language cultures
- has knowledge about cultural differences between Norway and target language countries
- masters relevant terminology within the subject area
- has skills in practical approaches to teaching of culture
