Research Methods in Drama and Theatre

The course gives an introduction in research theory and basic aesthetic theory issues relevant to research and development tasks in drama and theatre studies. The course addresses the academic discipline of drama and theatre studies, and frames the current understanding by pointing at the history of the research discipline. The connection between theoretical and methodological choices is focused as a basic premise for further work and analyses of fields of exploration and problematics.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.

The candidate prepares for the scientific role and to the independent master thesis.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:

- Knowledge about general theory of science and how the field of drama and theatre relates to historical and contemporary positions in the theory of science.
- Knowledge about the methodical consequences of different scientific positions in social science and the Humanities
- Knowledge about aesthetic theory and how drama and theatre can be viewed and understood from different aesthetic positions.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to:

- Evaluate course plans within drama and theatre, academic texts and practices in the context of scientific and aesthetic theory.
- Substantiate and evaluate choices of design and methods in projects within the field of drama and theatre in the context of scientific and developmental work.

The course is taught in lectures and seminars.

Before final examination the student must have delivered an accepted written exercise (1200-1500 words) and delivered an accepted seminar presentation.

About the assessment: Based on the teaching and curriculum the student is required to write an essay (4000-5000 words) on a given topic of her own choice. The number of words does not include front page, preface, table of content, literature and attachments. The word numbers must be added to the essay, and the student is responsible for its accuracy. The essay is assessed internally to accepted or not-accepted.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments on the department's bulletin board or on It’s Learning.

Students must keep oriented about messages from department or teacher via It’s learning, Innsida, or via bulletin boards.
