Dramaturgy and Concept Work

During the course students will develop the ability to produce an original concept for a performance. As a basis for this, dramaturgy will be taught historically and theoretically through manifestos and academic theory. Dramaturgy is also related to the art of acting, the art of directing, as well as to theories/models of organization and production. Students will work individually and in groups with assignments concerning target audience, choice of subject matter, interpretation, adaptations, and concept development.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
- Knowledge about dramaturgical traditions and processes.
- Knowledge about dramaturgical tools and analyzing concepts.
- Knowledge about thematic, formal and artistic correlations in development of a concept.
- Knowledge about relations between analytic and creative processes in dramaturgy and concept work.

Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to:
- Read and analyse stage texts concerning reference to realization of the play
- Use different dramaturgic mind sets on stage-texts and theatrical performances or processes.
- Combine academic and artistic creativity.
- Develop independent concepts for theatrical performances or processes.

Instruction is provided in the form of lectures, seminars, and exercises. The students work individually and in groups with assignments concerning target audience, choice of subject matter, interpretation, adaptations, and concept development.

Course requirements:
To take the final examination students must have a minimum of 80 % approved attendance and participation of minimum 80 % of the lectures / activities. The obligatory assignment must be passed in order to access the exam.

Students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher on Blackboard.

Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.
