Arts Education as Practice-led and Artful Inquiry

This course qualifies candidates to approach arts educational teaching, planning and research through artistic and collaborative practice. The course focuses on creative processes in arts educational professional learning communities and on developing tools of investigating, structuring and leading in different art forms, crossovers between them, and in artful approaches to learning on other subjects. Improvisation and dramaturgical thinking as key educational skills in teaching in the arts will be emphasised, but also choreography, music composition and visual design as educational resource will be explored. Performative research, with practice-led and post-qualitative approaches, will be emphasised as ways of doing research with the arts. The candidate will develop communicative, collaborative and pedagogical skills and knowledge within a broad and participatory arts educational field, as well as knowledge of how to engage creatively and artfully with different populations and individuals in different educational contexts, in a way where difference is understood as a value.

The candidate

• can creatively and critically plan, carry out, evaluate and present teaching with the help of improvisation and dramaturgical thinking
• can investigate, a master’s level, analytical question through practice-led inquiry.
• can use difference and community as a central value for planning, carrying out and developing arts education practises.
• can use communicative and educational skills on an advanced level within a broad and participatory arts educational field.

General competence

The candidate

• can constructively contribute in enquiry led student peer review processes.
• can apply their knowledge in new areas in order to carry out explorative and creative projects in arts education.

The teaching is organized as 4 intensive seminars at campus in Trondheim.

Candidates will learn through the following methods:

• Workshops, collaborations, and constructing a community of practice
• Reading, analysis, writing and peer discourse
• Planning and carrying out own arts educational project in collaboration with a self-chosen arts/arts education institution.
• Self-directed learning
• Artful presentations and performance lectures

Self-directed learning through an independent project in this course will require collaboration with a self-chosen institution relevant for arts education. The organization of collaboration with and research at this institution must be arranged by the students themselves.

Diverse sites for learning might be used during this course, which might include visits to urban or nature outdoors spaces as well as to different arts (educational) institutions like performance venues, museums, cinemas or concert halls. Possible entrance fees will be paid for by Department for Teacher Education.

Compulsory activities

There are four compulsory activities in this course:

• Practice-based but theory-infused presentation
• Artful and verbal presentation of own practical arts educational teaching session at a self-chosen institution.
• Theory-infused written lesson plan.
• Participation during intensive seminars 75 %.

All compulsory activities must be approved in order to take the examination for this course.
