Artistic practice, knowledge and research

This course qualifies candidates to approach arts educational teaching planning and research questions through creative and collaborative practice. The course focuses on creative processes in arts educational professional learning communities and on developing tools of investigating, structuring and leading in different art forms and cross-overs between them. Impulses will be given from dramaturgy (theatre), choreography (dance), composition (music) and designing (visual arts). In a collaborative creative practice process the candidate will develop communicative and structural skills and an expressive vocabulary within a broad and participatory arts educational field, as well as knowledge of how to engage creatively with different populations and individuals in different educational contexts.

Knowledge, the candidate
- thoroughly understands structural tools and understandings within the arts (in the realms of dramaturgy, choreography, composition, and visual design), and how this can be utilised in teaching.
- has advanced knowledge of of how to engage creatively with different populations and individuals in different educational contexts.

Skills, the candidate
- can confidently investigate a masters level research question through creative and collaborative practice.
- can confidently engage in co-creative teamwork within arts education processes.
- has advanced communicative and structural skills and an expressive vocabulary within a broad and participatory arts educational field.

General competence, the candidate
- is capable of supporting enquiry led peer review processes.
- can disseminate a diverse range of approaches to creative practice in arts education.
- can apply their knowledge in new areas in order to carry out advanced projects in arts education.

Candidates will learn through the following methods:
- Collaborative creative practice as artistic research in groups
- Leading, teaching and participating in arts educational collaborative and participatory creative practices.
- Collaborate with guest teachers from different art fields. Reading and discussing course literature in a collaborative reading group.

Diverse sites for learning will be used during this course, which might include visits to urban or nature outdoors spaces as well as to different arts (educational) institutions like performance venues, museums, cinemas or concert halls. Possible entrance fees will be paid for by Department for Teacher Education.

Students’ collaborations with different arts educational institutions will be encouraged.

Compulsory activities
There are three compulsory activities in this course. These compulsory activities must be approved in order to be able to deliver the examination assignments. They are as follows:


Compulsory activity 1 (group): Development of an area of practice
The creation of a clear and relevant problem area that serves as an impulse for teaching planning as creative practice as well as well as practice-led research, created by the collaborative group / the professional learning community that the candidate is part of. The problem area must be informed by literature approved by the course responsible teacher, and read and discussed in the collaborative reading group.


Compulsory activity 2 (group): Development, performing and documentation of creative practice
The development, performing and documentation of a collaborative creative practice around the chosen problem area, shared at a mini-conference arranged by the candidates and course responsible teacher (which is part of the examination form of the course).

Compulsory activity 3 (individual): Peer feedback
Actively give response and formative evaluation to other groups’ collaborative creative practices shared within the mini-conference.

Compulsory activity 4 (individual): Participation during intensive seminars
In order to complete the compulsory activities on-site participation during the intensive seminar weeks is necessary. Participation at performance of group creative practice is compulsory. Participation at other seminar days 75 %.

All compulsory activities will be assigned with approved/not approved and must all be approved in order to take the examinations for this course.

Other relevant information
Self-directed learning though independent projects in this course will require collaboration with self-chosen institutions relevant for arts education. The organization of collaboration with and research at these institutions must be arranged by the students themselves.
