About this course

Content

The course deals with a number of topics for connecting networks and network security. This includes the following areas:

  • Static and dynamic route protocols
  • Network-related threats and mitigation
  • Access control, ACL
  • Wireless networks
  • WAN technologies, VPN and remote access
  • Quality of service, QoS
  • Network monitoring
  • Network virtualisation

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

  • K1: The candidate is familiar with basic principles and central technologies related to interconnection of networks, both locally and over larger geographical distances.
  • K2: The candidate is familiar with the networks' role regarding information security.
  • K3: The candidate is familiar with various threats against modern networks, and how to reduce the risk these threats impose.

Skills:

  • F1: The candidate can design and install secure computer networks with basis in a distributed organization's needs.
  • F2: The candidate can analyze various security solutions, and evaluate these in regard to the services the network should provide.

General competence:

  • G1: The candidate is familiar with the risks an organization faces, and how these are affected by various strategies used to secure the network.
  • G2: The candidate is able to participate in cross-disciplinary discussions and communicate important concepts regarding network security.

Teaching methods

  • Lectures
  • Lab work in groups. The exercises are carried out on physical network equipment.
  • Mandatory assignments
  • Most of the teaching material is in English; some is in Norwegian.
