About this course

Content

Dance Technique and Repertoire A-C offers a foundation in traditional dance through knowledge and abilities in the dance forms, and using them as artistic expression. Development of physical, technical and stylistic abilities for the dance forms are central, as well as music-dance relationships.
Traditional dance per c, with in depth studies in chosen dance traditions and their interaction with the traditional material is the main focus in Dance Technique and Repertoire B. Master teachers, field work and analyses of traditional dance material from archives will form the basis for the subject, as well as focus on dance technique and movement expressions, technique`s for learning from traditional sources, dance analysis, repertoire, and development of technique`s for self rehearsal. The course requires significant independent study.
The student is required to practice dancing in traditional/ folk dance environments and to be part of students’ performances and projects.
Compulsory courses: ”Other dance genres I” This course gives a basic introduction to techniques from theatre dance and is based on practical sessions, lectures and work in groups to have the two groups of students work together. The course is evaluated as completed / not completed based on participation in the compulsory teaching.

Learning outcomes

• Has knowledge of traditional dance repertoire, styles, techniques and traditional music within a self-selected traditional area
• Has knowledge of improvisation and the making of expression of personality, musicality, and movement expression in traditional dance
• Has knowledge of interaction among dancers and musicians
• Has knowledge of techniques of rehearsals in traditional dance
• Has knowledge of collecting, searching for and using references of traditional dances and traditional music
• Has knowledge of various techniques of theatrical dance
Skills:An examinee with a completed qualification in DANS4120
• Can perform traditional solo, couple and group dances with traditional style, rhythm , and technique
• Can dance selected traditional dances interacting with the traditional music of the dance
• Can collaborate with traditional musicians
• Can copy/ mimic and analyze dance
• Can plan and evaluate methodology of rehearsing dance
• Can document dance on video as a field work
• Can use analytical tools on different dance sources to give a written report

• Can perform for an audience theoretically and practically
• Can work goal-oriented both individually and in collaboration
• Can reflect upon issues connected to the subject

Teaching methods

The course is given in partly intensive sessions. Solo and couple dance technique is mainly taught in plenary, partly for smaller groups. The student will work with individual practical tasks between sessions.The student is required to learn dances in traditional environments, from films and from written sources through supervised individual work. Field work is a part of the subject, and the student should give an oral speech about it. Compulsory written report based on dance analyses. The tasks also include writing of reflection logs and produce recordings from exercises.
