Labanotation

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and skills, interest and a critical attitude to the use of Labanotation as tool and method of documentation. The main part of the course will focus on developing skills in notating various kinds of dancing. The course includes theoretical as well as practical studies of Labanotation dealing with notation and reconstruction. The course builds notation skills as well as a critical view, in order to develop the students' awareness of the choices made in processes of notation and reconstruction.

Students who successfully complete this course will:

Have achieved a basic level of labanotation, practically and theoretically.

Be able to write and read a choreography of medium difficulty.

Have developed interest for, understanding and experience in labanotation for future use in the studies and professional life.

Have developed critical and creative thinking around Labanotation practically as well as theoretically.

Learning methods and activities:

Lectures, seminars, workshops and supervised practical, methodological exercises.

Assessment:

The Labanotation coursework will be assessed by a practical test at the end of the intensive teaching period.
Each student will be asked to read, perform and defend their interpretation of a simple Labanotation score.
S/he will be allowed 30 minutes to prepare the presentation and 10 minutes to perform and defend the
interpretation. This test is worth 30 % of the overall grade.
