Basic Ethnochoreology

The module contains a an outline of the genres and dialect variation in dance and music found in traditional Norwegian folk dance, as seen in the larger context of cultural and dance history. Reference to parallel variants from other countries will be included. Basic Ethnochoreology provides an introduction to ethnochoreological theory, research methods and techniques, with a specialization in dance analysis and dance technique (the main dance). The students will choose a selection of traditional dances for their exams. DANCE1011 is closely connected with DANCE1012 and to get a complete picture, both modules are needed.

• has knowledge about dance types and dialect variation in traditional Norwegian dance.
• has knowledge about traditional dance/music in contexts of cultural history and dance history
• has knowledge about assessing dance aesthetically, as practiced for instance in adjudication of competitions
• has knowledge about dance analysis
• has knowledge about safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage
Skills:An examinee with completed qualification in DANS1011
• is able to learn from and relate to different kinds of dance environments
• is able to analyse, notate and learn a dance by own choice from a film recording
General competence:An examinee with completed qualification in DANS1011
• is able to reflect on aestecial and disciplinary as to use of archival material
• is able to connect to theory and methodologies while working practically

Lectures and practical exercises in intensive periods of teaching, work with films, notations and practical excercises. Presence in sessions compulsory.

Assessment: The students will solve 3 tasks: A test in dance analysis, an essay on theoretical issues and the presentation of the main dance analysis. The tasks are assessed with letter grades. Each task counts 1/3
